Getting your car to the United Kingdom

We are experts in logistics and can assist with getting your car into the United Kingdom safely from Hungary.

If your car is already in the United Kingdom, we can either remotely register your car – or you can bring it to our premises for the required works to be completed.

However, if you require transportation of your car to the United Kingdom there are many different transport methods that can be used.

Depending on your requirements, the car can be transported inland to a port, or transported the entire way on a car transporter. Our car logistics solutions are bespoke to your car, so get in touch so that we can better understand your requirements.

We also have our own enclosed euro transporter that is regularly driving through Europe and we can collect your car from Hungary, then deliver it to our premises in the United Kingdom.

The customs clearance process and paperwork required to clear your car are handled by ourselves to ensure your car does not incur any additional storage fees.

Since Brexit this is a more complicated process but it is something that we are here to help with. Our customs agents will ensure tax is paid correctly and efficiently.

Once your car has cleared customs and is delivered to our premises we modify the car

The car is modified and tested by ourselves for compliance in the United Kingdom.

After which all relevant testing is undertaken onsite at our privately owned IVA testing lane.

For cars that are under ten years old from Austria, they will need to comply to UK type approval. We can either do this with a process called mutual recognition or through IVA testing.

Every car is different and every manufacturer has different support standards for assisting their clients through the import process, so please enquire so we can discuss the optimum speed and cost option for your individual circumstances.

We manage the whole process on your behalf, whether that is dealing with the homologation team of your car’s manufacturer or the Department for Transport, so you can relax in the knowledge that you will be legally registered with the DVLA in the shortest time possible.

Left hand drive cars from Hungary will require some modifications, including those to the headlight pattern to avoid glare for oncoming traffic, the speedo to display the miles per hour reading and the rear fog light if it is not already universally compliant.

We have built an extensive catalogue of the makes and models of car we have imported so can give you a quick cost estimate of what your individual car will require.

Vehicles over ten years old
Over 10-year-old cars and classics are type approval exempt, but still require an MOT test and certain modifications prior to registration. The modifications depend on the age but are generally to the headlights and rear fog light.

Frequently asked questions

What is the process for importing cars under ten years old?

We do this using an IVA test. We have the only privately operated IVA testing facility in the UK, meaning your car will not be waiting for a testing slot at a government testing centre, which can take weeks, if not months to obtain. We IVA test every week on-site and therefore have the fastest turnaround to get your car registered and on UK roads.

How long does it take to transport a car from Hungary to the United Kingdom?

The time it takes to transport a car from Hungary to the United Kingdom can vary based on several factors, including the mode of transportation, the specific route taken, customs clearance processes, and any unforeseen delays. Here are some general estimates for different modes of transportation:

1. Road Transport: If you choose to transport the car by road, the journey from Hungary to the United Kingdom can take several days. The exact duration will depend on the route taken, traffic conditions, border crossings, and rest stops. On average, road transport could take around 3 to 7 days, but it’s important to note that unexpected delays or adverse weather conditions could extend this timeframe.

2. Ferry Transport: Many people choose to transport their cars via ferry from continental Europe to the United Kingdom. The ferry journey time can vary depending on the departure and arrival ports. Common ferry routes include those between Calais (France) and Dover (UK), or Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Hull (UK). Ferry crossings can take approximately 1 to 2 hours, with additional time for boarding, disembarking, and customs checks.

3. Rail and Channel Tunnel: If you opt for rail transport through the Channel Tunnel (Eurotunnel), the journey time for the train itself is about 35 minutes. However, you should factor in time for check-in, loading, and unloading. The Channel Tunnel connects Calais (France) and Folkestone (UK).

4. Air Transport: Air transport is typically not used for transporting cars due to the logistics and costs involved. However, if specialized car transport services via air are considered, the process could be completed in a matter of hours.

It’s important to remember that the above estimates are general guidelines and that actual transit times can vary based on a variety of circumstances. Factors like peak travel seasons, customs clearance, paperwork processing, and unforeseen delays could impact the timeline. It’s recommended to work with reputable transport companies and logistics providers who can provide more accurate estimates and help you navigate the process effectively.
