What is the process for importing a car from Denmark?

Most of the cars we register from Denmark are driven to the UK by their owners and are already here, simply requiring the import registration processing with the DVLA. We can however handle the whole process of getting your car from any EU member state to the UK.

We mostly truck the cars by road on fully insured transporter cars, but are happy for you to drive the car to us instead if it works for you.

Transport & Customs

We can transport your car from anywhere in Denmark to the United Kingdom. Following the end of the Brexit transition period, different rules apply for import taxes when importing a car to the UK.

If you are moving to the UK and have owned your car for more than 6 months whilst living outside the UK for more than 12 months, you can import the car tax-free using the HMRC Transfer of Residency scheme.

If you have bought a car in the EU and import it to the UK, you will pay 20% import VAT if under 30 years old of age, and 5% VAT if over 30 years old of age.  This is calculated on your purchase invoice and any transport costs to the UK.

Onwards delivery

Once your car is in the United Kingdom we can move it to the required location. For cars from Denmark so long as they don’t require an IVA test we can deliver it to you – handling the paperwork element of the registration and allowing you to use a local garage to MOT test your car.

Once your car has cleared customs and is delivered to our premises we modify the car

The car is modified and tested by ourselves for compliance in the United Kingdom.

After which all relevant testing is undertaken onsite at our privately owned IVA testing lane.

  • We modify your car at our premises
  • We test your car at our premises
  • We take care of the entire process

We then register your car for you.

Once all prerequisites are satisfied, My Car Import takes care of the car registration process.

We then deliver or you can collect your car.

We register hundreds of cars each year from all over the EU so rest assured we know what we are doing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the process for importing cars under ten years old?

We do this using an IVA test. We have the only privately operated IVA testing facility in the UK, meaning your car will not be waiting for a testing slot at a government testing centre, which can take weeks, if not months to obtain. We IVA test every week on-site and therefore have the fastest turnaround to get your car registered and on UK roads.

Every car is different and every manufacturer has different support standards for assisting their clients through the import process, so please get a quote so we can discuss the optimum speed and cost option for your circumstances.

We manage the whole process on your behalf, whether that is dealing with the homologation team of your car’s manufacturer or the Department for Transport, so you can relax in the knowledge that you will be legally registered with the DVLA in the shortest time possible.

We have built an extensive catalogue of the makes and models of cars we have imported so can give you an accurate estimate of what your car will require to be ready for its IVA test.

What is the process for importing cars over ten years old?

Cars over 10 years old are type approval exempt but still require a safety test, called an MOT, and similar modifications to an IVA test prior to registration. The modifications depend on the age but are generally to the rear fog light.

If your car is over 40 years old it does not need an MOT test and can be delivered directly to your UK address ahead of it being registered.

How long does it take to transport a car from Denmark to the UK?

The transportation time for a car from Denmark to the United Kingdom can vary depending on the shipping method, the specific departure and arrival ports, weather conditions, and any potential delays during the shipping process.

Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) Shipping:

RoRo shipping involves driving the car onto a specialized ship at the departure port and driving it off at the arrival port. The estimated shipping time for RoRo shipping from Denmark to the United Kingdom is typically around 1 to 3 days. This is because there are frequent RoRo sailings between the two countries.

Container Shipping:

Container shipping involves loading the car into a shipping container, which is then loaded onto a cargo ship. The estimated shipping time for container shipping from Denmark to the United Kingdom is generally longer, ranging from 5 to 10 days or more, depending on the shipping route and other logistical factors.

Please note that these shipping times are only estimates and can be subject to change based on various factors such as shipping company schedules, customs clearance, and any unforeseen circumstances.

If you are considering transporting a car from Denmark to the United Kingdom, it is advisable to work with a reputable and experienced shipping company like My Car Import that can provide you with more accurate and up-to-date information on shipping times and the entire transportation process.

Can you drive from Denmark to the UK?

If you want to drive your car here and then register it once you arrive, you can absolutely drive the car here yourself.

It t is possible to drive from Denmark to the United Kingdom, but it involves taking a combination of ferries and road travel. As of my last update in September 2021, here’s the general route to drive from Denmark to the UK:

Ferry from Denmark to Germany: Start by driving from your location in Denmark to one of the ports in Northern Germany that offer ferry services to the UK. Some common ferry ports in Germany with routes to the UK are Cuxhaven and Hamburg. You will need to book a ferry crossing for yourself and your car.

Ferry from Germany to the UK: Board the ferry with your car and cross the North Sea to the United Kingdom. The destination port in the UK will depend on the specific ferry route you choose, but common arrival points are Harwich, Hull, or Newcastle.

Continue Driving in the UK: After arriving in the UK, you can continue your journey by driving on the left-hand side of the road to your desired destination.

It’s important to note that the ferry routes and schedules may vary, and it’s advisable to check with ferry operators for the most up-to-date information on available crossings and booking procedures.

Additionally, if you plan to drive from Denmark to the UK, be aware of the specific driving regulations and requirements in both countries. Ensure you have the necessary documents, such as a valid driver’s license, car registration, insurance, and any other documents required for international travel.

When you want to register the car you will have to pay customs and duties potentially, but feel free to fill out a quote form for more information.

How much does it cost to import a car from Denmark to the UK?

The cost of importing a car from Denmark to the UK can vary widely based on several factors, including the type of car, the shipping method, import duties and taxes, transportation within the UK, and any additional services you may require. Here are some key cost components to consider:

  1. Vehicle Purchase Price: The initial cost of the car in Denmark is a significant factor. This price can vary based on the make, model, age, condition, and any modifications the car may have.
  2. Shipping Costs: Shipping costs depend on the shipping method chosen (RoRo or container), the distance between the ports, and the shipping company’s rates. RoRo shipping is generally more cost-effective than container shipping.
  3. Import Duties and Taxes: Importing a car into the UK can incur import duties and Value Added Tax (VAT). The amount of VAT is based on the car’s value and any applicable exemptions or reduced rates.
  4. Customs Clearance Fees: These fees cover the administrative costs associated with customs clearance and processing the necessary paperwork.
  5. Vehicle Compliance Costs: If the car needs modifications or adjustments to meet UK regulations, such as lighting conversions or emissions modifications, these costs should be considered.
  6. Transportation Within the UK: After the car arrives in the UK, you’ll need to transport it from the port to your desired location. This could involve hiring a transportation company or driving the car yourself.
  7. Registration and Documentation: Fees related to car registration, obtaining UK license plates, and obtaining relevant documentation may apply.
  8. Insurance: You’ll need to arrange insurance coverage for the car before you can legally drive it on UK roads.
  9. Exchange Rates: Fluctuations in exchange rates between the Danish Krone (DKK) and the British Pound (GBP) can impact the overall cost.

To provide a rough estimate, here’s a general breakdown of potential costs for importing a car from Denmark to the UK:

  • Vehicle Purchase Price: Varies widely based on the car’s make, model, and condition.
  • Shipping Costs: Roughly £400 to £1,000 for RoRo shipping, and higher for container shipping.
  • Import Duties and VAT: Around 20% VAT on the car’s value plus any applicable duties.
  • Customs Clearance Fees: £50 to £100 or more, depending on the complexity of the process.
  • Vehicle Compliance Costs: Variable based on required modifications.
  • Transportation Within the UK: Depends on the distance and transportation method chosen.
  • Registration and Documentation: Around £55 to £85 for car registration and licensing.
  • Insurance: Insurance premiums vary based on the car’s value, type, and your personal circumstances.

Keep in mind that these estimates are subject to change based on current regulations, exchange rates, and other factors. It’s recommended to obtain specific quotes from shipping companies, customs agents, and other relevant service providers to get a more accurate understanding of the total cost involved in importing a car from Denmark to the UK.
