What is a Certificate of Conformity?

A European Certificate of Conformity (CoC) is an official document issued by a car manufacturer or its authorised representative that certifies a car's compliance with European Union (EU) standards and regulations.

The certificate ensures that the car meets the necessary safety, emissions, and environmental requirements set by the EU for road cars.

The CoC contains important information about the car, including its make, model, technical specifications, and identification numbers, such as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and the type-approval number.

This document is essential when registering a car in an EU member state, especially when importing a car from one EU country to another.

If you purchase a new car within the EU or are importing a used car from another EU country, you may need to obtain a CoC to register the car in your country of residence. The process for obtaining a CoC varies depending on the manufacturer and the country where the car was produced or first registered. Generally, you can request a CoC from the car manufacturer or its authorised representative in your country.

How do you get a CoC?

How much does a Certificate of Conformity cost?

The price varies between manufacturers and in some cases it can cost thousands.

If your car was originally made within the EU it should have been issued a CoC when you purchased it.

In the event that you don’t have a CoC and you need one for registering a car then it is at the manufacturer’s discretion as to how much they can charge for a replacement.

Will I pay import tax?

Are you moving to the UK?

If you are moving to the UK, have lived outside the UK for more than 12 months and have owned the car for more than 6 months, you will be eligible for a tax and duty free import.

To qualify, you will complete a Transfer of Residency application with HMRC. Customers of My Car Import have access to handy guides to complete this application.

Vehicles registered in the EU attract 20% import VAT, based on the purchase price of the car and any associated transport costs to bring it to the UK. The import VAT is calculated on your purchase invoice for the car, or a recent valuation if the invoice is more than 3 months old.

Vehicles registered outside the EU attract 20% import VAT and 10% import Duty, based on the purchase price of the car and any associated transport costs to bring it to the UK. Vehicles over 30 years old qualify for a special rate of taxation, due to their historical interest, similar to an antiquity.

You will pay 5% import VAT and no import Duty, based on the purchase price of the car and any associated transport costs to bring it to the UK. The import VAT is calculated on your purchase invoice for the car, or a recent valuation if the invoice is more than 3 months old.

Have you got a car that was formerly UK registered?

If you exported a car from the UK and are now returning with it, you may be able to import the car back into the UK tax free, as long as you can provide a UK purchase invoice when you acquired the car, along with a copy of your former UK V5C logbook.
