What is a Certificate of Conformity?
A European Certificate of Conformity (CoC) is an official document issued by a car manufacturer or its authorised representative. It certifies that the vehicle complies with EU standards and regulations, and that it meets the required safety, emissions and environmental standards.
The certificate carries the vehicle’s details – make, model, technical specifications, VIN and type-approval number – and it’s the document that proves a vehicle was built to an approved European type. That makes it essential when registering a car in an EU member state, and particularly when importing.
How you get hold of one varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and from country to country, which is where most people get stuck.

Prices vary significantly by manufacturer – for some marques a replacement certificate runs into the thousands. If your vehicle was manufactured in the EU it should have come with a CoC at the point of purchase, so it’s always worth checking the paperwork you were given first.

Do I definitely need a Certificate of Conformity?
Not always. It depends on the age of the vehicle, where it was built and what other paperwork you have. Where a CoC can’t be obtained and the vehicle is under ten years old, an IVA test is usually the alternative route.

I’ve lost my original CoC – can you get a replacement?
Yes. Replacements are ordered from the manufacturer, and we do this for hundreds of customers a month.
Before you order one, check the paperwork that came with the car – if the vehicle was manufactured in the EU, a certificate should have been supplied at the point of purchase.
How much does a Certificate of Conformity cost?
It varies significantly by manufacturer – for some marques the cost of a replacement runs into the thousands, and the price is entirely at the manufacturer’s discretion.

How long does it take?
That’s down to the manufacturer rather than us – some turn a request around in days, others take considerably longer, and the process differs from one country of production to the next.
We start the request as early in the import as possible so it isn’t the thing holding up your registration at the end.
What is a GB Conversion IVA?
It’s a secondary certification that most DVLA applications require alongside the CoC, confirming the vehicle has been converted to UK specification.
We manage this as part of the process, so you don’t need to arrange it separately.
