Is your car from the EU?

Unless you are bringing a car into the UK under the ToR scheme, you will have to pay VAT If you’re bringing a second-hand car into the UK from within the EU. You won’t have to pay any duties, and for cars over thirty years old, VAT is reduced to 5%.

What about Brexit implications?

Before Brexit, free movement of goods was in effect. Since the UK left the European Union in January 2021, this is no longer applicable.  This means that any imported cars are subject to tax laws that exclude EU.

If you’re moving to the UK and want to bring your car with you, you don’t have to pay any import duty or VAT. If you are unsure if you qualify for ToR relief, don’t hesitate to contact us for a quote and we’ll provide you with more information.

What about cars from outside of the EU?

What is Notification of Vehicle Arrival (NOVA)?

As of April 15th, 2013, the rules changed on how we are expected to notify HMRC of cars arriving in the UK from within the EU. My Car Import attended all stakeholder meetings and assisted HMRC in testing the new system before going live.

Our online portal allows us to forward your NOVA notification directly to HMRC on your behalf. Bear in mind that the NOVA system is directly linked to the DVLA so if you haven’t completed the notification, the DVLA will reject your new registration application.
