Importing a car from Australia to the UK

Importing a car from Australia to the UK sounds complex from the outset. There’s the 9,461.22 miles to contend with, so you’re immediately concerned about cost, safety, and the general logistics of getting your car shipped to the UK in one piece.

While it’s true that the overall import process is more than simply placing your car on a shipping container and sending it across the ocean – there’s in-land transportation, customs clearance, modifications to comply with UK road standards, IVA and MOT, and the paperwork that goes with it, we’re here to make it really simple for you.

We do that by taking over the entire process from start to finish.

How Do I Start the Import Process?

Easily. Complete our quote form and give us the information we need. Our team of agents will create a bespoke quote based on your requirements. If you’re happy with your quote, the process begins.

We’ll ask you a few questions about your car’s location and establish whether you’re looking for us to collect it from your chosen address. If you are, we’ll carefully plan the most efficient route for transporting your car to the nearest port.

My Car Import has worked hard to build longstanding and trusted relationships with our overseas transportation agents, so you can trust that your car is in good, safe hands.

Once your car arrives at the port, the shipping process is set in motion. Drawing upon their extensive experience importing cars from Australia to the UK with My Car Import, our car shipping operations team steps in. These experts are entrusted with the responsibility of managing our clients’ vehicles with the utmost care.

Will You Keep Me Updated?

From our thirty-plus years of experience, we know that our clients are always eager to know the progress of their vehicles during the shipping process.

That’s why we’ve provided a user-friendly online portal. This portal enables you to monitor the entire process in real time, providing updates on your car’s status and guidance on the various steps involved in the process. It gives you transparency and peace of mind throughout your vehicle’s journey from Australia to the UK.

Shipping Your Car to the UK

If you want ease of shipping, My Car Import can take care of the entire process. This includes the scheduling of your car’s ocean freight, loading, and unloading.

Handing it over to us means that you don’t have to worry about anything whilst your vehicle is at sea. The added value of the customer portal allows you to remain updated on the estimated travel and arrival dates.

We ship cars using shared containers. That means sharing the cost of the container with other cars we’re importing on behalf of our clients. It allows you to reap the benefits of a reduced rate for importing your car to the UK.

Let’s talk about container shipment. While there are numerous ways to import a car such as air, land, and sea, we prefer container shipping due to the safety and security it provides. It’s also the most cost-effective. Our expert team carefully loads your vehicle onto the shipping container to ensure it is at minimal risk of damage. If you would like a dedicated 20ft container for your car, however, please ask, as we also supply this for our clients.

We also understand that you might be relocating to the United Kingdom. If you are a transferring resident, you can also include your possessions within your vehicle. We’ll gladly discuss this with you should you require more information.

Will my car be Insured?

Yes. To ship a car without adequate insurance would be frivolous, so we cover your car with shipping-standard marine insurance. This means that your car is fully insured as per our terms and conditions.

Full marine insurance covers your vehicle in transit until you receive it in the UK. This covers the full purchase value in the unlikely event of a total loss, and any damage incurred has a repair excess of £450.

Arriving in the UK

When your car arrives in the UK, our dedicated team takes charge of the unloading process and efficiently manages all aspects of customs clearance, including the necessary paperwork.

The paperwork involved during the shipping process can be overwhelming. As you’re possibly aware, it only takes one small error for things to go haywire quite quickly. This can have a knock-on effect and before you know it, you’ve got yourself a delay.

It always pays to work with a company that oversees the whole process, it means that your paperwork is handled efficiently, and the stress is taken away from the rigmarole of clearing the vehicle through customs.

Fear not, we’ll get your car through customs and free you from the complications that regularly occur. We’ll also ensure that you pay the right amount, and don’t get caught up in paying unnecessary add-ons.

Following the successful customs clearance and the unloading of the container, we arrange the transportation of your vehicle to our facility in Castle Donnington.

My Car Import is fully responsible for managing and handling your car in the UK, providing you with peace of mind throughout the importation process.

Getting your car on the road in the UK

There’s every chance that your car will need modifications to be UK-compliant. We do this in several stages:

Inspection

We aim to get your car through the testing process. We’ll do a thorough inspection to assess any potential problems that might prevent it from passing. This allows us to undergo specific work.

We also inspect your car to see if there’s any damage from transit. It’s useful to provide us with pre-shipped vehicle images so we can assess them in detail.

Modifying

We’ll schedule time in our workshop to make any necessary changes. The most likely modifications are a speedometer and rear fog light conversion. We will also schedule any relevant testing needed to demonstrate compliance and roadworthiness in the UK.

Testing your car

Depending on you’re the age and model of your car, it’ll require an IVA test, MOT test, or both.

When importing a car that’s under ten years old from Australia to the UK, it will need to undergo the Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) process. This is a UK-specific scheme to ensure that imported cars meet the required safety and environmental standards.

We have the only privately owned IVA testing lane in the United Kingdom. We also conduct MSVA and MOT tests onsite so your car will be in our safe hands for the duration of this phase. All of these tests are undertaken at our premises.

Registering your car

Once your vehicle has passed the relevant tests, we submit your registration application to the DVLA. It takes around 10 working days to receive a registration number for your car.

Delivery or collection

Once you have a UK registration number for your vehicle, you can collect it from our facility in Castle Donington or we can deliver it to a chosen UK address.

How long does it take to import a car from Australia?

The time taken to get your car to the UK can fluctuate due to several factors. These variables include the shipping route, available vessels, port processing time in the UK, customs, and the organisations in the UK involved in testing and registering the vehicle.

On average, the importation process typically spans a timeframe of approximately 10 to 16 weeks depending on individual requirements.

To make the process more efficient, planning and coordination are imperative. Careful consideration of shipping logistics, customs protocols, and other essential details can help streamline the process and minimise any potential delays.

Getting your car back to the UK relies on a well-executed importation process that is compliant with all necessary regulations.

Can you help with part of the process?

Absolutely. While we’re specialists in taking care of the entire import process, we’ll gladly assist with individual aspects.

If you’ve already shipped your car but need help with modifications, take advantage of our private IVA lane where we can carry out the necessary modifications onsite.

If it’s registration that you need, we can happily do that for you, and you won’t have to wait for a lengthy period as per government waiting times.

Applying for the ToR scheme when moving from Australia

Many customers importing their cars from Australia to the UK are doing so as part of a wider relocation process. Under these circumstances, you can apply for the Transfer of Residence (ToR) scheme.

The ToR scheme allows individuals who are moving their usual place of residence from a country outside the UK to bring their personal belongings, including cars, without paying import duties and taxes.

To meet the eligibility criteria for the ToR scheme, you need to prove that you have lived outside of the UK for a certain period and that you’re relocating your main residence to the UK.

Applications for the ToR scheme are via the UK government’s official website. You will need to provide personal information, details about your move, and information about the items you are bringing with you, including your car.

You may also need to include proof of residence in Australia, proof of intended residence in the UK, proof of car ownership and usage, and other relevant documentation. Your application will be reviewed by the UK customs authorities who may request additional information or clarification if needed.

If your application is approved, you will receive a Transfer of Residence approval reference number. This reference number is crucial for claiming the benefits of the scheme, including potential exemptions or reductions in import duties and taxes for your car.

We’d be more than happy to provide more information on this should you need it.
