In the United Kingdom, car registration number plates follow a specific format that indicates the age of the car. The format changed in 2001, making it easier to determine the age of a car based on its registration number.

A “72” number plate would have been issued between September 2022 and February 2023. The current format for UK number plates is as follows:

  1. The first two letters represent the region where the car was registered.
  2. The two numbers following the letters represent the year of registration.
  3. The next letter indicates the six-month period in which the car was registered (March to August or September to February).
  4. The final three letters are random and unique to the car.

So, a “72” number plate indicates that the car was registered between September 2022 and February 2023. After February 2023, the format will change to “23” for cars registered from March 2023 to August 2023. The format continues in this pattern each year, with “73” for September 2023 to February 2024, “74” for March 2024 to August 2024, and so on.
