To transfer a number plate from one car to another in the UK, you can follow these steps:

Obtain the V317 Form: Visit the official DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) website or your nearest Post Office to get a V317 form. This form is used for the application to transfer a registration number.

Complete the V317 Form: Fill out the V317 form with all the required information. You’ll need to provide details about the current car with the registration number you want to transfer, the new car that will receive the transferred number, and the registered keeper details for both cars.

Submit the V317 Form: Once the V317 form is completed, submit it to the DVLA. You can do this by mailing the form to the DVLA or visiting a local Post Office that provides DVLA services. There may be a fee associated with the application, so check the current fee schedule on the DVLA website.

Receive the V778 Retention Document: If your application is approved, the DVLA will issue a Retention Document (V778) in your name. This document confirms that you have successfully transferred the registration number to the new car.

Assign the Number to the New Vehicle: With the V778 Retention Document, you can now assign the transferred number to the new car. To do this, you’ll need to complete the appropriate sections on the V778 form and follow the instructions provided.

Update the Vehicles’ Registration Certificates (V5C): Once the number plate has been successfully transferred to the new car, you must update the registration certificate (V5C) for both the old and new cars. The V5C will reflect the change of registration number.

Display the Number Plates: Once the transfer is complete, you can display the new number plates on the new car. Ensure that the number plates meet legal requirements and adhere to DVLA guidelines for font, size, and spacing.

It’s important to follow the DVLA’s guidelines and provide accurate information when applying to transfer a number plate. Failure to provide correct information or meet the requirements may result in delays or rejection of your application.

Keep in mind that the process and regulations for transferring number plates may vary in different countries or regions, so it’s best to check with the relevant car registration authority in your area for specific instructions and procedures.
