Shipping a Vehicle From Hong Kong to the UK

At My Car Import, we have seen a significant rise in the number of people wanting to ship their car from Hong Kong to the UK in recent years. If you are therefore looking for a service that can handle every aspect of the shipping process on your behalf, then you’ve come to the right place.

The process of shipping a car from Hong Kong to the UK takes the following path:

Deregistration & Export Plates

This is the only stage of the process where action is required from you as you’ll need to deregister the vehicle in Hong Kong and collect your export plates. This is an incredibly straightforward process and, once completed, will enable you to take the vehicle directly to our team on the ground ahead of shipping.

Loading & Shipping

To ensure you vehicle receives the treatment it deserves, we employ our own team in Hong Kong who handle the loading and shipping process, so we are in full control at all times. They will carefully load your vehicle into the container before securely fastening it in place, guaranteeing that there will be no movement at any stage of the journey.

If you wish for further peace of mind, we also offer transit insurance as an additional option. This insurance package will protect the vehicle up to its replacement value for the duration of its trip from Hong Kong to the UK.

Tax Guidelines for Imports

It is important to be aware of the import tax guidelines associated with bringing in a vehicle from Hong Kong.

If you are moving to the UK too, then you’ll be pleased to know that you won’t have to pay any tax, as long as certain criteria are met. You must have owned the car you are shipping for at least six months and have lived outside of the EU for over 12 months. Once you and the vehicle are in the UK, you won’t then be able to sell it on for a further 12 months.

If you don’t meet the above criteria, you will be required to pay import tax and VAT which is calculated on the amount you paid for the vehicle. If the vehicle was originally built within the EU, a single payment of £50 import tax and an additional 20% VAT will need to paid, whilst for those vehicles built outside of the EU, 10% duty and 20% VAT will be charged.

Should you be importing a car which is over 30 years old, by meeting the conditions such as having a vehicle which hasn’t been largely modified from its original state, you are likely to qualify for a reduced rate of import tax and VAT at just 5%.

Testing & Modification in the UK

Once your vehicle has safely arrived into the UK, it will need to be subjected to a variety of tests and modifications to make it suitable to be driven on our roads. Until these tests and modifications are completed, the vehicle will not be approved for registration with the DVLA.

Fortunately, at My Car Import we have the facilities and the team to conduct all of these tests and modifications in-house, which in turn considerably improves the speed at which you can get out on the road.

All vehicles under ten years old undergo an IVA test and, within our facility, we have our own approved IVA test lane for passenger vehicles. As a result, we can complete this test far quicker than if your vehicle had to be sent off to a government run centre.

We also have the equipment to complete all the necessary modifications that are required when switching from roads in Hong Kong to roads in the UK. The most common changes include adjusting the headlight’s beam settings, installing a rear fog light if not fitted as standard and converting to mph on your speedometer.

If your vehicle is over ten years old, a number of modifications will still be necessary yet rather than an IVA test, a standard MOT will be conducted to assess its roadworthiness and safety. We will again complete this for you.

DVLA Registration Approval

Following the completion of the modification and the successful passing of tests, your vehicle will then be approved for registration by the DVLA. We have a DVLA Account Executive who is exclusively available to My Car Import customers, which again speeds up the whole process.

As soon as you’re approved, we’ll fit the new UK number plates to your vehicle and you can either collect directly from our centre or we can arrange for transport to take the car wherever you want it.

With our team on board, the process of shipping a car from Hong Kong to the UK couldn’t be easier. To find out more or to discuss pricing options, give us a call today on +44 (0) 1332 81 0442.
